Most of 21_21 Design Sight is pushed below the landscaped edge of Tokyo Midtown, leaving low folded-steel roof planes hovering above the ground. Tadao Ando uses the descent into the galleries to turn a small cultural building into a sequence of compressed and expanded spaces. The project is a particularly accessible example of his later work, where exposed concrete is combined with unusually thin, sharply engineered metal surfaces.
