1200 Intrepid
Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) · Philadelphia, United States · 2016
1200 Intrepid is an office building at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The project’s curved facade responds to the circular movement generated by the nearby Synchrocyclotron at the site, translating a scientific and historical reference into architectural geometry. Its white precast facade, large windows, and landscaped setting give the building a calm but distinctive presence within the redeveloped industrial campus. The project is relatively restrained compared with BIG’s more iconic works, but that makes it useful as a case study in contextual form-making. Rather than importing a generic office block, BIG uses the site’s history, movement patterns, and campus conditions to shape an identifiable contemporary workplace.
